Skillet Deep Dish Pizza
This weekend I saw this recipe in Better Homes and Gardens magazine. I thought I would try out a similar recipe in my new Lodge skillet. I didn’t follow the above recipe (besides the basic instructions) instead I used the follow ingredients.
1 jar marinara
3 garlic cloves
3 multi-colored peppers
1 large onion
1 8-ounce bag of shredded Trader Joe’s mozzarella mixed with parmesan cheese
1 package of Italian sausage Pre-made whole wheat pizza dough from Trader Joe’s
Oil your cast iron skillet well with Olive Oil.
Remove the casings from the Italian sausage and brown in a large pot. Once browned, drain the fat from the sausage and place in a bowl.
Chop garlic, onions and peppers. This is a lot easier if you are using something like this.
Brown the vegetables in the same pot you browned the meat in.
Mix the browned meat back into the vegetables and pour in the whole jar of marinara.
Let mixture simmer on low (this could be done several hours in advance). Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Using a rolling pin to roll out the pre-made pizza dough. Spread a little flour on the board and rolling pin to prevent sticking.
Put dough into the skillet.
Pour meat and vegetable mixture into the skillet and sprinkle with cheese.
Bake for 30 minutes. Let stand 15 minutes.
